Review:
The Swiss band Samael began as more of a straight ahead black metal band, but over the years their sound evolved as they added more industrial and electronic elements. Their last album was 2004’s Reign Of Light, which was more electronica than metal.
With Solar Soul, the primary instrument is still the keyboard, but there is also more guitar this time around. The result is a heavier album that is also as diverse as you’d expect from Samael. Their sound is sometimes harsh and industrial, sometimes groovy and very metal, and other times symphonic and epic. There’s even a song with a sitar and a Middle Eastern vibe. There’s always plenty of melody, and the arrangements are solid.
Vorph’s vocals are an acquired taste and are a low pitched rasp. There are also some female vocals, which add a nice touch. You have to give Samael credit for always stretching their limits and not being afraid to experiment with new musical directions, even if all their fans might not like it.
